Engine Tech - Keeping Down the Noise
Mousse cans make a great silencer for two-stroke engines and can be made from items found at local hardware stores and can even add more horsepower if configured correctly.
Another large contributor to the red zone on the dB scale, are propellers that are not correctly matched to the engine output. On our large gas-powered airplanes, it is common to hear the prop tips going supersonic causing a racket that can be heard from far away. Just a change of two inches in pitch, can settle the screaming down and even add better performance!
Search the threads of RC Universe or Flying Giants to see what unique methods are being used to quiet our planes and save our fields. One of the largest contributors of clubs losing charters, is noise. Our fields are being encroached upon by more and more housing developments leading to complaints and closures.
94 dB is a good target for keeping the peace and quiet.
